BASICS

CHARACTER NAME: Canonically, he's referred to as the Wanderer, but it's not a name or a title as he's never explicitly called Wanderer with the capital w in dialogue. He gets a player chosen name at some point in the story. In this case, it's Yuu.

CANON: Genshin Impact

CANON POINT: After all Sumeru patches, including the Inversion of Genesis Interlude Chapter and all limited-time events up to Patch 4.0.

AGE: 400+ mentally, physically in his late teens/young adult.

BACKGROUND

HISTORY: Wiki Link!

PERSONALITY:
  • What impression does your character give when meeting someone for the first time? How does the first impression differ from your character’s true nature?

  • The first impression one might get of the Wanderer is that he's a surly individual who prefers to keep to himself. He speaks very rudely and tends to phrase his statements in the most offensive way possible. If he's irritated by someone, he's not afraid to let them know it, nor is he afraid to let people know what he thinks of them. Insulting people is second nature to him, which most would find difficult to deal with. He's bitter, and seems not to care for the feelings of others.

The reality is that the Wanderer is a lot kinder than he appears to be, as he will help people who are in need of assistance, as evidenced in the Interdarshan Championship, when he offered water to the Traveler so they could give it to Tighnari, who was suffering from dehydration in the desert. Or when he appeared to offer a word of advice to Layla, who had absolutely no idea how to proceed with the assigned task and was slightly panicking. Despite his rudeness, he doesn't actually mean harm, as he is trying to atone for his forgotten sins. He also likes to be helpful to others because he measures his worth in how useful he is to other people, a view which was born from his abandonment and subsequent use in the Fatui, the organization he was once a part of.

There are many facets behind his rude behaviour. One reason is to keep distance from others. As his previous incarnation, the Balladeer, he committed many atrocities in the name of revenge and for the Fatui, and he was extremely violent and temperamental. As a result, in his current incarnation, he believes himself to be someone people should not associate lightly with, as he has once proven himself to be a dangerous individual. He's also not used to being shown kindness, nor is he used to showing kindness, so he hides it all behind a veneer of rudeness. Because he's spent so long being bitter, it's natural for him to act that way now. It's not to say he still isn't bitter, but his hatred is no longer directed at humans and the world.

  • What are some of your character's regrets? How is your character impacted by them?

  • The Wanderer is a character that is heavily impacted by his regrets. He had committed a great number of atrocities as a member of the Fatui Harbingers, but the reality was that he had been manipulated by the Fatui into joining them. They manufactured a betrayal to break his soft heart and lead him to the organization, so he holds regret for letting them manipulate him so easily. He also regrets his past self, because it was his innocence and naivety that allowed him to be so easily manipulated by others. In part, he blames his creator, the Electro Archon Ei, for abandoning him and leaving him with no way to defend himself from such manipulations, but in the end, he holds himself accountable for everything that happened because of his naivety.

His greatest regret is the near total destruction of the Raiden Gokaden, the five bladesmithing schools of Inazuma. Because of his perceived betrayal by Niwa Hisahide and the other members of Tatarasuna, he sought revenge against them and their families, masterminded the fall of three of the bladesmithing schools, and pretty much destroyed the Isshin school before losing interest and leaving the Amenoma School unscathed. But as it turned out, he was never betrayed by Niwa, so his revenge had been completely pointless, and many people had suffered because of his misguided feelings.

His regrets culminate in an attempt to delete himself from the world. He tampers with Irminsul, Teyvat's world tree, and removes all traces of his existence, in the hopes that it would reverse everything that had happened as a result of his actions, so that he could undo his sins and save his friends. Unfortunately, all that came of it was a revision of history such that everything that happened still happened, but the cause was different now. He could not erase his own sins, so he has resolved to atone for everything he's done, starting with acting as the Dendro Archon's assistant.

  • What are your character’s ambitions/goals? Why are they important to your character?

  • The Wanderer's current goal is to atone for all the sins he's committed in the past, as Kunikuzushi/the Balladeer. He deeply regrets the damage he's done to the families of his human friends of his past, and regrets the way he lived, having let the false betrayal hurt him so deeply he became a twisted individual who reveled in violence and destruction.

This goal is important to him not only because he feels regret for his actions, but because other than his atonement, he feels as if he has no reason to live. During the period where he'd forgotten his past, he spent his life as a drifter, wandering from place to place, seeking his purpose in life. He had no direction in life, no personal ambitions, no place that he could call home, because he had been abandoned by his creator from the very beginning. So he uses his past as something to give him direction, and to fill the void in his chest that arose from the lack of a human heart. Without this, he would be nothing, and he would have nothing.

INVENTORY: Anemo Vision (100% inert), a tiny handmade doll of himself in his oldest outfit.

    POWERS

SKILLS/ABILITIES: The Wanderer is an Anemo Vision user, which means he has control over Anemo aka the wind. The most prominent aspect of his control over Anemo is his flight, which has no range and can be sustained indefinitely (if cutscenes are to be believed rather than gameplay mechanics). Other than that, he attacks with windblades and uses elemental reactions to buff himself.

Beside his Vision abilities, the Wanderer is not human. He's a divine puppet, and as such, he does not need to eat or sleep, or consume any source of energy to sustain himself. He doesn't need to breath, and he can't be poisoned or affected by anything that would only affect natural lifeforms. Additionally, while it's unclear exactly to what extent, he has an incredibly durable constitution, which not only allowed him to endure tons of experimentation, but also allowed him to visit the Abyss multiple times without being corrupted, which would be normal for a regular human. He can be wounded though, and it's uncertain if he has self-healing abilities (canon states he was repaired by Dottore).

NERFING: His Vision is inert, meaning he won't be able to access his Anemo abilities. I don't know if his inherent puppet traits need to be nerfed? If they do, I think it's probably just his durability. The only problem is that canon doesn't actually specify what they mean by durability, so I'm not sure how to nerf him if it does need to be nerfed.
