The distinction based on sleeves is only present in women's kimono. When it comes to men's kimono, the difference comes from the quality of the fabric, the number of layers worn and the presence of crests or patterns on the fabric. If you're looking for a casual outfit, a patterned kimono with or without a haori, and without crests is enough.
